Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is direct computer-to-computer transfer of business
information in a specific predetermined format. It speeds up the transfer of information
between business partners by eliminating the paper documents normally used in transactions
(purchase orders and invoices for example). The documents are replaced with electronic
forms (or sets) transmitted between trading partners' computers. Since no data has
to be re-keyed, errors due to manual omission or transposition are effectively eliminated.
